In outdoor coating market, paint producers are aggressively launching new product with improved weatherability aiming at the maintenance use. However, at working places overlay coating by urethane-base paint is still popular. As outside wood needs maintenance absolutely, new approach is required from the maintenance viewpoint. Scale-down of public works and building construction starts affects outdoor wood coating market because it depends on new construction. Total sales of the coating is estimated as 5-Bio Yen and decreases 5-10% against last year.

New product is being launched for maintenance use

Maintenance use market is expected to make business growth, recently new product which improves weatherability, colorability, workability, smell and safety is actively launched. Particularly most players seek to improve weatherability. In addition, longer repainting cycle and white-, natural- finishing are being required. It results from this background that the launch of high weatherable clear coat is increasing.


Conventional outdoor wood coating have a good designability to highlight wood-grain and show antiseptic, moth-proof, mildew-proof effect. However, it is so far difficult to add better weatherability on natural performance. At the moment, any penetrating colorant doesn't have 10-year durability. The weatherability producers improve approach to the requirement customers want, but cannot overtake it.


Customers don't always understand the wood is used out of doors although they want same weatherable performance as other painted parts. The designer and constructor should check whether customers seek good design or performance and discuss how to do maintenance, if they try to use outdoor wood coating. Otherwise we may continue to face a risk caused by outdoor coating or wood use out of doors. Producers should not only focus on product development to meet the requirement, but also propose right formulation for the maintenance and create its market. It means it is key who is responsible for the maintenance.

Who do maintenance?

How an expert like job coater do maintenance? We contacted 19 job coaters, house spraying expert, and interviewed about current situation of outdoor wood coating.
Main coated parts are gable, roof eave, wood deck and fascia. Used paint is penetrating outdoor wood coating or clear coat after overlay coating by silicone, urethane base coat.
Job coaters recognize "weatherability" is most important, "flexibility", "adhesion" and "air permeability" is second priority. Film performance is more demanded than workability or appearance. Regarding weatherability, it is required in both of penetrating and filming type paint. The other property is specified for filming type. The durability is deserved in both cases.


However, it is remarkable that job coaters actually find a difficulty in adding the durability with a coating. They said, "Paint producers should announce customers that frequent maintenance of coating should be needed" and "We recommend customers to support by metal plate if they face serious damage on the coating due to its swelling". Producers are now promoting new "semi-filming" product to achieve better weatherability, but job coaters think these cannot solve the problem.


Constructors feel a risk if they coat gable or roof eave by themselves. But it could cost a lot if they often ask job coaters to repaint, therefore, as a result no spray is applied till discoloring and degradation happen. Without regular maintenance, penetrating coating is not suitable, filming and overlaying by resin paint could be popular.
If constructors do maintenance, outdoor wood coating takes a big advantage. As it is easy to use and recoat, they can clear both of good appearance and durability. Although the sales channel could be through DIY store, they don't need to cut a contact with job coaters.


Other external wall materials need 10-year durability, therefore, job coaters might make frequent communication with constructors through every check of wood part...
As for gable and roof eave, it is applied by filming paint due to severe maintenance. In case of wood deck, entrance pole and balcony, job coaters need to visit for maintenance every 2-3 years and then can propose the paint or service. It is very useful tool to continue the relationship between job coaters and customers.


As outdoor wood coating single paint is not nominated because it depends on the appearance and durability and which parts or how to do maintenance. Unless the requirement is clarified, the coating might not perform properly on the wood. Wood part is firmly preferred in terms of good design, so it could be possible to make a scheme to collaborate among coating seller, job coaters and DIY store.
